Nepal Protest: Voices from Gorakhpur’s Nepali Community

Recently, Nepal has witnessed significant political turmoil, marked by widespread protests and a change in government. In Gorakhpur’s Kudaghat area, where a large Nepali-origin community resides, many have strong opinions about the events unfolding in their homeland.

Local residents, some born in Gorakhpur but with deep Nepali roots, shared their perspectives. Fulwan Thapa highlighted that the new generation in Nepal is actively protesting against corruption, which had reached alarming levels under previous governments. The youth-led movement, known as “Jain Ji,” succeeded in bringing about change, leading to the formation of a new interim government. Thapa expressed hope for a brighter future under the new leadership.

Gaurav Chhatri, another local, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the extent of corruption and the frustration among Nepal’s youth. He explained how the government even shut down internet services to suppress the protestors’ voices. Chhatri remains optimistic that the new government will bring positive change.

Leela Bahadur shared concerns about the impact of internet restrictions on the youth but remains hopeful that the new administration, led by Sushila Karki, will provide better opportunities and facilities for young people.

On India-Nepal relations, the community agreed that the ties between the two countries are unique and deeply rooted, often described as “roti-beti” (bread and daughter) relations, signifying familial and cultural bonds that go beyond politics. They believe that these centuries-old connections, strengthened by figures like Goddess Sita and Lord Buddha, will endure regardless of political changes.

The Nepali community in Gorakhpur continues to watch developments in Nepal closely, hoping for stability and progress in their ancestral land.
