Violence Rocks Rohtas: Two M*rders in 24 Hours Raise Questions on Law and Order in Bihar
Rohtas, Bihar: In a span of 24 hours, the district of Rohtas in Bihar has been shaken by two brutal murders, creating a climate of fear among residents and raising sharp questions on police efficiency in the state.
Double Murders Shock District
According to reports, the first incident involved the brutal murder of the father of a JD(U) party leader, who was killed by having his throat slit. The second case involves the horrifying lynching of a local businessman near Ramhara Station, who was beaten to death with sticks. Both incidents occurred within Amjhor police station limits.
In the case of the murdered businessman, the victim was identified as Virendra Kumar, a resident of Jogadi. Authorities report that Kumar was attacked on Friday by people lying in wait, who ambushed him with sticks and rods, resulting in fatal injuries. The police responded promptly and have arrested relatives (referred to as ‘gotia’ in local parlance) of the deceased. FIRs have been filed against both accused individuals as per the complaints lodged by the victims’ families, and investigations are ongoing.
Witness Accounts and Local Reaction
Local residents, recounting the events, explained that the assailants had been waiting in ambush. Upon Kumar’s return from the fields, they attacked him mercilessly. “By the time we got information and reached from Tiloutu, the attackers had severely beaten him. Even though we tried to rescue him and rush him to the hospital, he died on the way,” said the victim’s younger brother, Baban Mehta.
Another witness, Jai Ram Singh, confirmed: “The victim was attacked with sticks and rods in Jagodigboliya village. There was no known dispute, but now the matter is being registered as an inter-family feud (gotia dispute).”
Police and Administrative Response
Following the incident, Circle Inspector Sohel Ahmad reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem at Sasaram Sadar Hospital. He confirmed that swift action was being taken based on the family’s complaint and that additional police forces had been deployed to prevent further escalation.
SP Roshan Kumar, speaking on the incidents, stated that both cases appear related to personal enmity or ongoing disputes among relatives. “Some of the accused are still absconding and police are conducting raids to apprehend them,” he said.
Law and Order Concerns Grow
The spate of violence in Rohtas is not isolated. Similar incidents have been reported recently from Patna, Sitamarhi and across Bihar, where bold daylight murders have left the public anxious. As these crimes increase, criticism mounts against local law enforcement and government authorities, with opposition parties openly questioning their ability to maintain order and the efficacy of ongoing policing efforts.
Locals express frustration at repeated failures to check crime, as recurring incidents are seen as a lapse in policing and administrative control.
For now, Rohtas remains tense, with police vigil heightened and public confidence shaken. Both murders are being investigated as outcomes of personal and family disputes, but the larger questions about law and order in Bihar remain unresolved.
