From Struggle to Stardom: The Inspiring Journey of India’s Laughter Queen Bharti Singh

Some people’s achievements provide a sense of deep satisfaction, and Bharti Singh is one such name. We’ve all witnessed Bharti’s journey with our own eyes—she is India’s first female stand-up comedian, loved by millions and fondly known as the “Laughter Queen.” But behind her remarkable success lies a story filled with pain and countless sleepless nights, as she revealed in a candid interview with Raj Shamani.

Comedian Bharti Singh Opens Up About Her Childhood Struggles With Mother And Family

In this emotional interview, Bharti opened up about her childhood struggles, sharing details that were previously unknown to the public. Bharti lost her father at a very young age, and her mother had to work as a domestic helper, going from house to house to feed her family. Recalling her childhood, Bharti said, “I remember my mother would come home after being scolded by her employers. She’d share her pain with my sister. Many times, she’d come home injured, her hands wrapped in bandages. On Diwali, we’d eagerly wait for her, knowing she’d bring home some sweets. We couldn’t afford to buy them ourselves, nor buy firecrackers or new clothes for the festival. My mother’s employers would give her old clothes, and I’d get those to wear.”

Bharti continued, “My mother was very beautiful and could have remarried easily. But instead, she chose to become a housemaid—to provide for her children. I am a maid’s daughter. I used to accompany my mother to work, where the housewives would ask her to clean better and would give her leftovers to eat. We’d be so happy to receive leftovers like kofta or dal makhani, something we rarely tasted otherwise.”

In this heartfelt conversation, Bharti also disclosed that before her birth, her mother had tried multiple times to terminate the pregnancy, as the family already had two children—a boy and a girl—and didn’t want a third. “Back then, people didn’t even realize they were pregnant in the first couple of months. My mom tried all kinds of traditional medicines, sat for hours in certain positions, ate papaya and dates—hoping to end the pregnancy. But I was meant to arrive,” Bharti shared.

She continued, “My mother gave birth to me alone at home, as my father was out on his night duty. She only called the midwife to cut the umbilical cord, paying her just ₹60. So, I was literally born for ₹60. Today, I have bought my mother a house worth ₹1 crore 60 lakhs. I was an unwanted child—my family thought two kids, one boy and one girl, were enough. But after my birth, they showered me with love.”

Bharti’s story has left many in tears, serving as a powerful lesson for girls everywhere. Her journey proves that women should aspire to more than just marriage and starting a family—they should dream big and chase their passions fearlessly.
