It was an ordinary Thursday, June 12th, in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. For the students of BJ Medical College, it was just another day. Some were relaxing in their hostel rooms, others were having lunch in the mess. No one could have imagined the nightmare that was about to unfold.

At around midday, Air India Flight 71—a Boeing 787 Dreamliner—lost control and crashed directly onto the Atulyam Hostel complex and the college mess. In the blink of an eye, the very place that had echoed with laughter and the chatter of young dreams was reduced to rubble, smoke, and screams.

The crash claimed the lives of 270 people, including all 240 passengers on board. But the tragedy didn’t end there.

Among the victims were four young medical students—Jaiprakash Chaudhary from Barmer, Rajasthan; Manav Bhatu from Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan; Aryan Rajput from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh; and Rakesh Dira from Bhavnagar, Gujarat. These weren’t just names—they were the hopes and pride of four families, young men who dreamt of saving lives as doctors, their futures buried under the debris.

The crash also took the lives of five family members of doctors living on campus and left dozens of students severely injured.

The Faces Behind the Headlines

For those who survived, the trauma was unimaginable. Ritesh Kumar Sharma, a student, was trapped under the rubble for hours, his legs badly injured. He watched, helpless, as his friends became victims of the tragedy. The horror of that moment is something most of us can only try to imagine.

As the nation reeled in shock, the pain was felt thousands of kilometers away—in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

A Stranger’s Compassion

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, founder of Burjeel Holdings and Managing Director of VPS Healthcare, saw the images of the crash and was shaken to his core. “I saw the footage of the mess and hostel, and it brought back memories of my own days as a medical student in Chennai,” he said. “Those corridors, those beds, the laughter of friends, the pressure of exams—no one ever imagines an airplane crashing into that world.”

For Dr. Shamsheer, this was more than just another news story. He had lived that life, walked those halls, and understood the dreams and struggles of medical students. The pain felt personal.

He decided to do what very few would even think of—he announced a financial aid package of ₹6 crore for the victims and their families. Each of the four families who lost a medical student would receive ₹1 crore. The five students who were seriously injured would each get ₹20 lakh, and the families of doctors who lost loved ones would also receive ₹20 lakh each.

“This is not just about money,” Dr. Shamsheer said. “It’s a symbol, a message that the medical fraternity stands together across generations and borders. Those students chose the path of serving others, and their memories should not be reduced to just a headline.”

This wasn’t the first time Dr. Shamsheer had extended help in the face of tragedy. In 2010, after another air crash, he had reached out to victims’ families. But this time, the loss hit especially close to his heart.

Today, BJ Medical College is still struggling to recover from the shock. The Junior Doctors Association and other campus groups are working tirelessly to support affected students and families. The grief is overwhelming, but so is the outpouring of compassion from across the country—and beyond.
