From the Valleys of Kashmir to the Corridors of Power: The Inspiring Journey of IAS Officer Athar Aamir Khan
In the serene valleys of Kashmir, where the mountains echo with stories of resilience and hope, a quiet, thoughtful young man emerged—one who learned more from life than from the pages of books. His name is Athar Aamir Khan.
Born in the small town of Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir, Athar’s journey to national fame was something he never imagined as a child. Today, he is a household name, especially among India’s youth, after securing All India Rank 2 in the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination. Athar’s rise from the picturesque but troubled streets of Anantnag to becoming a national inspiration is a tale of perseverance, love, heartbreak, and unwavering commitment to public service.
Choosing Home Over Comfort
Athar had the opportunity to choose any state cadre as an IAS officer, but despite the challenges and unrest in his home state, he chose to serve Jammu & Kashmir. This decision was not just about a career—it was a mission. With his remarkable achievement in the UPSC exam, Athar made his parents proud and etched his name in the hearts of millions across the country.
But Athar’s story is not just about becoming an officer. It is also a story of love, separation, and rebuilding life with courage. Currently serving as the District Magistrate of Kulgam, Jammu & Kashmir, Athar has remained in the limelight for various reasons over the years. This time, however, his work has drawn national attention for its deep connection to India’s religious and cultural fabric.
A Symbol of Communal Harmony
As the sacred Amarnath Yatra commenced, Athar, along with his colleagues and local residents of Kulgam, was seen warmly welcoming the first batch of pilgrims passing through the district. Offering garlands and bouquets, Athar and his mostly Muslim team stood as a symbol of communal harmony, greeting Hindu devotees from across India with open hearts. This gesture has earned Athar widespread praise, highlighting his commitment not just as an officer, but as a true public servant.
Humble Beginnings
Despite being one of India’s most recognized IAS officers, Athar comes from a modest background. Born on September 5, 1992, his father was a teacher, providing a nurturing environment for learning. Excelling in academics from a young age, Athar received awards like ‘Best Young Scientist,’ hinting at his bright future ahead. He pursued Electrical Engineering at IIT Mandi, but his real dream was to serve the nation as an IAS officer. With relentless dedication, he cracked the UPSC exam in 2015, securing the second rank nationwide.
A Love Story That Captivated the Nation
Athar’s life took another turn during his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, where he met Tina Dabi—the All India Rank 1 topper of the same UPSC batch. Their friendship blossomed into love, and their interfaith marriage in April 2018 became a national sensation. Hailed by many as a symbol of unity and new-age India, the couple faced both admiration and criticism, with some labeling their union as “ideal” and others as “controversial.”
However, happiness was short-lived. After two years, Tina removed “Kashmiri Bahu” from her social media, sparking rumors of trouble. The couple eventually parted ways, finalizing their divorce in 2021. Tina later married IAS officer Pradeep Gawande, while Athar quietly returned to his duties, never publicly expressing his pain.
Rising Above Setbacks
Post-divorce, Athar served in various administrative roles, including CEO of the Srinagar Smart City project, Municipal Commissioner of Srinagar, and now as Deputy Commissioner of Kulgam. Life gave Athar another chance at love when he met Dr. Mehreen Qazi, a doctor and social media influencer from Kashmir. Mehreen, with impressive academic credentials from the UK and Denmark, and experience at Delhi’s Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, became Athar’s partner in 2022. The couple welcomed their son, Ehan, in 2024, marking a new chapter of joy in their lives.
A Public Servant at Heart
Athar’s presence at the Amarnath Yatra, personally welcoming pilgrims, once again showcased his dedication to communal harmony and public service. He is not just an officer, but a servant of the people, bridging divides and building trust.
From the narrow lanes of Kashmir to the policy tables of Delhi, Athar Aamir Khan’s journey is a testament to resilience, belief in love, and maintaining dignity through adversity. His life story continues to inspire, showing that true success is not just about personal achievement, but about serving others with integrity and compassion.
