Despite Outrage Over Kanhaiya Lal’s Murder, Film on His Life Fails at the Box Office

One undeniable truth remains: the level of hypocrisy in Indian society is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. On June 8, 2022, the brutal beheading of Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli by two Muslim men in Udaipur, Rajasthan, jolted the entire nation. The murder sparked widespread outrage, bringing thousands to the streets in protest and uniting the country in solidarity with Kanhaiya Lal’s grieving family.

Udaipur Files Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder Movie Earn Only ₹1 Lakh On Box Office

However, the public’s outpouring of support seems to have vanished with the release of a film based on Kanhaiya Lal’s life and tragic death. The movie, which sheds light on little-known aspects of the case and promised to donate its earnings to Kanhaiya Lal’s impoverished family, hit theaters on August 8. Yet, audiences stayed away in droves.

The film managed to earn only ₹13 lakh on its first day and a mere ₹1 lakh on the second. Released on 4,500 screens, “Udaipur Files” has seen shockingly low attendance despite previous mass protests demanding justice for Kanhaiya Lal.

Demand to halt the film’s release was strong. Mohammad Javed, the eighth accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, had filed a petition in court seeking to block it until his trial concluded. He argued that the film’s trailer and promotion could incite communal tensions and possibly influence his case. The court eventually allowed the film’s release, but only after the censor board enforced 55 cuts.

If attendance doesn’t increase in the coming days, the film is at risk of being pulled from cinemas as a commercial failure. In a heartbreaking moment, Kanhaiya Lal’s son reportedly broke down in tears while watching his father’s murder depicted on screen. While the film’s emotional impact is undeniable, public apathy has left theaters nearly empty.

The question lingers—how can justice be served if people are unwilling to even listen to the story? Once again, it seems evil is poised to triumph.
