Delhi Breathes Easier as Yamuna Water Level Drops Below Danger Mark, Life Begins Returning to Normal

Article:

Delhi is finally seeing signs of recovery after days of anxiety caused by the rising Yamuna river. The water level, which surged past the danger mark on September 2nd, has now receded to 205.22 meters, bringing relief to thousands affected by flooding in low-lying areas.

Standing at the iconic Old Railway Bridge, the reduction in Yamuna’s water level is clearly visible. While road traffic across the iron bridge remains restricted, train services—previously halted due to safety concerns—have resumed, signaling a return to normalcy.

Several neighborhoods, including Mayur Vihar, Yamuna Bazaar, Majnu ka Tila, and Monastery, were inundated, forcing residents into temporary shelters. Now, as the water recedes, families are gradually returning home. However, challenges remain: many areas are still covered in sludge and mud, and cleanup operations will take time.

At Nigambodh Ghat, where last rites had been suspended due to flooding and a damaged wall, water has finally receded. Cremation activities have resumed, marking another step toward normal life.

With the Yamuna’s water level now below the danger mark, Delhi’s situation is steadily improving. Authorities continue working on restoration and sanitation, as the city looks forward to putting this episode behind and returning to its daily rhythm.
