India Assures Belgium of Humane Treatment for Mehul Choksi if Extradited: Arthur Road Jail Barrack 12 Prepared

Article:

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has provided detailed assurances to the Belgian government regarding the treatment of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, should he be extradited to India. Choksi, wanted in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, is currently fighting extradition in Belgium, citing concerns over human rights violations and personal safety.

In a formal communication, the MHA guaranteed that, upon extradition, Choksi would be housed in Barrack 12 of Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. The ministry outlined that the barrack would be equipped with proper lighting and ventilation, and that Choksi would be provided with a mattress, pillow, bedsheet, blanket, drinking water, and necessary medical facilities. These assurances are aimed at addressing Belgium’s concerns about prisoner welfare and human rights.

This move mirrors previous cases involving Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, where British officials inspected Indian jails before approving extradition requests. The Indian government’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to bringing back economic offenders and ensuring they are treated in accordance with international standards.

While the extradition process may take time, the MHA’s detailed assurances have raised expectations that Belgium will soon agree to extradite Mehul Choksi. The government remains focused on ensuring that all fugitives who have committed fraud against India are brought back to face justice, with proper safeguards in place to protect their rights.
