Monsoon Mayhem: Heavy Rains Paralyze Himachal and Delhi, Red and Orange Alerts Across Multiple States

Severe monsoon rains have wreaked havoc from Delhi to Himachal Pradesh, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and major disruptions to daily life. The relentless rainfall has left hundreds of roads blocked, power and water supplies interrupted, and communities on high alert across North India.

Himachal Pradesh: Landslides and Destruction

In Himachal Pradesh, over 300 roads are now closed due to landslides and flooding, with the worst-hit areas being Mandi (181 roads closed), Kullu (84), Kangra (23), Sirmaur (11), Una (7), and Shimla (5). The major incident occurred in the Senj Valley of Kullu district, where a massive landslide brought down a large section of the hillside, damaging electricity lines and completely blocking roads. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this landslide, but the area remains under strict administrative surveillance.

The impact extends far beyond transportation: 491 water supply schemes are currently halted, most of them in Kullu district, and 72 electric transformers are inoperable, mainly in Solan and Mandi. People in many areas are facing blackouts, lack of drinking water, and severely disrupted daily life.

In Sirmaur, a dangerous landslide on the Paonta Sahib-Shillai highway crushed two vehicles. Thankfully, both drivers escaped with minor injuries. Yet, this monsoon has already claimed 29 lives in the state since June 20, along with financial losses estimated at nearly ₹270 million.

Delhi: Urban Flooding and Disruptions

The Indian capital, Delhi, has also been battered by heavy downpours since Monday night, resulting in waterlogging and flooding across multiple neighborhoods. Morning commuters—office workers and students alike—faced immense difficulties as major streets and underpasses became impassable.

According to the India Meteorological Department, more rain is in store for Delhi over the coming days, with citizens warned to expect continued disruptions to transportation and day-to-day activities.

Nationwide Alerts: Widespread Impact

The extreme weather is not limited to North India. Red and orange alerts have been issued in numerous states:

Uttarakhand: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted across all districts, prompting school closures in places like Dehradun.
Northeast India: Orange alerts for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, with the risk of very high rainfall.
Other States: Karnataka is under orange alert, and warnings for intense rainfall have been issued for Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Haryana.

Caution Advised for Travel Plans

Authorities strongly advise residents to check the weather before venturing out, to avoid travel to hilly regions, and to remain indoors and at safe locations until the situation stabilizes.
