Heated Debate in Parliament: Bollywood Voices Struggle of Film Industry Amid High Taxes and Rising Costs
A dramatic exchange unfolded in Parliament as representatives from the film industry passionately addressed the mounting challenges faced by Bollywood and India’s entertainment sector. Interruptions and heated remarks were heard as key members demanded that the government acknowledge and act on the financial burdens threatening the very survival of the audio-visual medium that connects India to the world.
It began with passionate pleas to the chair to strike from the record personal attacks and baseless statements flung during the session. “We are one of the highest tax-paying industries in the country,” a representative asserted while frustration grew over being interrupted and spoken over. In defense of the industry, one member said, “Don’t talk out of turn. Stop this nonsense. Please, don’t discredit what we contribute.”
Beyond the stars and scripts, the speaker highlighted the hardships faced by daily-wage workers, technicians, and countless behind-the-scenes contributors who form the backbone of the industry. Drawing a striking analogy with the rising costs of essential items, she remarked how even coriander and chilies, once freely given by vegetable vendors, must now be paid for—a reality that regular housewives can resonate with, reflecting the everyday pain of inflation. “I speak not only for myself but for all the women in this house who run households,” she said, earning applause from both her peers and viewers.
She criticized how the entertainment industry, often used for photo ops and publicity during elections or national events, is otherwise neglected in the country’s economic policies. “Successive governments have ignored us. When there is need, you call us, take photos, and publicize, but you don’t consider what this industry actually needs,” she said.
The discussion turned to the alarming closures of single-screen cinemas, the struggles of small theaters, and dwindling audiences due to rising ticket prices. “Do you want to finish this industry?” she questioned. “This is the only industry that connects the entire world to India. If you cripple it with taxes and indifference, you destroy a huge part of the country’s global identity.”
The Finance Minister was urged to seriously review taxation and policy for the audiovisual industry. The emotional appeal ended with a stark warning: “Don’t hurt the industry so much that you erase a crucial part of yourself. Literature, art—and now, audio-visual media—are all under threat. Please, don’t let this be the end.”
Echoing the urgency, calls were made for the government to treat the hardships of the film industry as a significant matter, warranting attention and immediate relief. For millions of workers and creative voices, this debate is more than politics; it is a fight for survival and India’s cultural soul.
Stay tuned for more updates and reactions as the fate of the film industry continues to be discussed in Parliament.
