First Indian on ISS, Shubhanshu Shukla, Bids Emotional Farewell After Historic 14-Day Mission—A New Dawn for India’s Space Ambitions
New Delhi/International Space Station – In a moment that will be etched in the annals of Indian space history, astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to complete a mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), returning home on July 15 after a groundbreaking 14-day journey that captivated the nation and inspired millions.
A Proud Farewell Among the Stars
As the ISS crew gathered for a heartfelt farewell ceremony, Shukla reflected on his incredible journey, expressing gratitude to his team, his country, and the global space community. “It’s been an incredible journey—one I could never have imagined when I boarded Falcon 9 on the 25th. The people, the teamwork, and the support made it truly special,” he said.
Shukla, joined by three international astronauts as part of the Axiom-4 mission, conducted a series of scientific experiments and live broadcasts from space. His interactions included a historic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he discussed the future of India’s space program and the importance of sharing his experiences to strengthen upcoming missions like Gaganyaan.
Experiments That Could Shape the Future
During his time on the ISS, Shukla performed experiments whose results could significantly contribute to India’s future space programs and the global search for life beyond Earth. Indian scientists and students back home eagerly await the results, which promise to enhance the nation’s capabilities in human spaceflight and research.
A Message of Unity and Inspiration
In his farewell speech, Shukla highlighted the magic of space and the power of humanity when united for a common goal. “What humanity is capable of when we come together from different parts of the world is truly incredible,” he said, thanking ISRO, NASA, and international partners for their tireless support and training.
Switching to Hindi, Shukla delivered a powerful message to his fellow Indians:
“From space, today’s India looks ambitious, fearless, confident, and proud. Our journey in human spaceflight is long and challenging, but if we are determined, even the stars are within reach.”
He referenced Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space 41 years ago, and added, “India from space appears even more beautiful and majestic than on any map. Today’s India still looks the best in the world.”
A Nation Celebrates a Hero’s Return
The entire country awaits Shukla’s return, celebrating not just his achievements but the new era of Indian space exploration he represents. The Axiom-4 mission, which faced several delays before its successful launch, marks a significant milestone for India’s ambitions in human spaceflight.
As Shubanshu Shukla returns to Earth, he carries with him invaluable memories, lessons, and a renewed hope for India’s cosmic future—a future that now feels closer than ever.
