15,000 Prisoners Escape from Nepal Jails, India Increases Border Security

A major security crisis has emerged on the India-Nepal border after reports that over 15,000 prisoners have escaped from 25 jails across Nepal. Indian security forces are on high alert, and strict checking is underway at all border crossings, including Raxaul, Jogbani, Darjeeling, Sonauli, and Siliguri.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), India’s border security force, has already arrested 63 escaped prisoners who tried to enter India. Security has been tightened along the 1,751 km-long open border, which usually allows citizens of both countries to cross with just proof of nationality.

The unrest in Nepal has led to heightened vigilance, especially along the borders of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand. Indian authorities fear that escaped convicts may try to enter India illegally, so SSB and police personnel are patrolling the border day and night. Temporary checkpoints have been set up, and mobile monitoring teams are active, armed and ready to respond.

So far, 60 escaped prisoners have been caught at the Nepal border: 22 at the UP border, 10 at the Bihar border, and 3 at the Bengal border. All border security officers remain on high alert.

Meanwhile, in Nepal, the army and security forces have recaptured 192 escaped prisoners and seized 94 weapons. During a confrontation at Ramechhap district jail, two inmates were killed and 12 injured by army action while demanding release. In another incident, 15 juvenile inmates escaped from Nepalgunj’s Jayendu Kishore juvenile home but later returned voluntarily.

The situation remains tense, with both countries on alert to prevent further security breaches and ensure public safety.
