The “I Love Mohammad” poster controversy in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has sparked widespread debate and protests. The issue began when 25 people were booked after displaying “I Love Mohammad” banners during a religious procession in Syed Nagar on September 4. Hindu groups reportedly tore down the banners, leading to tensions and police action against the Muslim youths involved.

The FIRs have triggered nationwide protests, with many expressing support for the slogan online. A video of a Hindu girl, Karishma Singh, went viral, where she defended the right to say “I Love Prophet Mohammad,” arguing it is not a crime and comparing it to “Jai Shri Ram” slogans at Hindu events.

Protesters claim the banners are an expression of love and respect for Prophet Mohammad, protected under freedom of expression. Women in Lucknow also protested, demanding the FIRs be withdrawn.

Police clarified that the FIRs were not filed for displaying “I Love Mohammad” banners, but for putting up banners and tents at non-traditional locations and for tearing down banners during the procession. Authorities urged people not to spread misinformation and stated that any innocent names would be removed from the case after investigation.

The controversy continues to trend on social media, highlighting ongoing debates about religious expression and communal harmony in India.
