Dehradun Flooded After Relentless Rain: Uttarakhand Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert, Rivers in Spate

Monsoon rains have returned to Uttarakhand with renewed intensity, plunging Dehradun and surrounding regions into chaos. Overnight and continuing showers have left much of the city waterlogged, flooding homes, streets, and marketplaces. Rivers are swelling dangerously, and the government is on high alert as the weather situation worsens.

Relentless Downpour Brings City to Standstill

From late night through the morning, Dehradun has been battered by torrential rainfall. The images coming from the city are alarming—roads and alleys have turned into streams, vehicles struggle through deep water, and shops are inundated. Cattle, cars, and other belongings have been swept away or submerged. Residents, faced with the overwhelming force of nature, can do little but capture videos of the destruction.

Meteorological Department Issues Orange Alert

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Dehradun and several other districts. The forecast predicts continued heavy rain and thunderstorms across the hills and plains, with some places likely to experience very intense rainfall. There’s a warning, too, for the possibility of lightning strikes, especially in areas already saturated by the relentless rains.

Rains Wreak Havoc Across Uttarakhand

The effects are not limited to Dehradun. Several districts, including Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Champawat, are all bracing for more rain as the IMD predicts further showers in the coming days. For Bageshwar, Dehradun, and Pithoragarh in particular, there is a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall on the 12th of the month, with a yellow alert issued for other areas.

Ongoing Crisis: No Relief Expected Soon

With rain showing no signs of letting up, the region remains at risk. The authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid riverbanks and landslide-prone areas. Disaster management teams are on standby, and the local administration is monitoring water levels closely. For now, locals can only wait and hope for the monsoon fury to subside.
