Double Attacks on Kapil Sharma’s Cafe in Canada: Why Are Two Notorious Gangs Targeting India’s Top Comedian?
In a series of chilling events that have shocked not just India but also the Indian diaspora in Canada, popular comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly opened “Cups Cafe” in Surrey, Canada, has become a repeated target of violent attacks and extortion threats. The situation has left fans, authorities, and the community questioning the forces behind these assaults and the rising dangers for South Asian entrepreneurs in North America.
What Happened at Kapil Sharma’s Cafe?
Kapil Sharma, known for bringing laughter into every Indian household through “The Kapil Sharma Show,” started a new venture with his wife Ginni in the Newton area of Surrey, Canada. The eatery quickly became a hotspot, but the joy was short-lived. On the night of July 10, 2025, gunshots shattered the calm—at least 8 to 12 rounds were fired into the cafe, damaging property but fortunately injuring no one.
The incident rattled the South Asian community in the city and quickly made international headlines. The terror was intensified when Harjit Singh Laddi, a Germany-based operative from the banned Khalistani terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), claimed responsibility on social media. Laddi accused Kapil’s show of mocking Nihang Sikh traditions and demanded a public apology, but did not provide concrete evidence.
Second Attack and New Threats
Shockingly, barely a month later, on August 7, 2025, gunmen struck again. This time, the assault was even more intense, with 6 to 25 rounds fired at the cafe, sending fresh waves of fear through Surrey’s residents. This attack was claimed by Goldy Dhillon, reportedly affiliated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang—one of India’s most notorious criminal organizations, already infamous for targeting Punjabi celebrities.
Dhillon declared on Facebook that Kapil Sharma was being targeted for failing to answer gang calls, and chillingly threatened that Mumbai could be the next target. Indian authorities took notice: Mumbai Police increased security around Kapil’s residence, given the explicit threat. Still, Kapil has not made any public statement about these attacks so far.
A Pattern of Violence Against Indian-Origin Businesses
The Surrey area, home to a large South Asian population, has witnessed a surge in attacks against Indian-origin business owners. In recent years, threats, extortion attempts, and violent crimes have been on the rise. Similar attacks have been reported against stars like Gippy Grewal and AP Dhillon. The Bishnoi gang notably claimed responsibility for an attack on singer Sidhu Moose Wala and other celebrities, exposing the reach of these crime syndicates both in India and abroad.
Motives: Extortion or Religious Offense?
The motives behind the attacks remain murky. The first, claimed by BKI, appeared to center on alleged religious slights, though solid evidence is missing. The second, by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, simply referred to Kapil ignoring phone calls, suggesting extortion or business intimidation. The possibility that one gang is taking advantage of another’s actions, or that both are trying to extort money under different pretexts, cannot be ruled out.
Community Reaction and Police Response
While Surrey’s mayor condemned the attacks, calling them an assault on the community, some criticized her focus on social media over substantive law enforcement. The cafe was temporarily closed but reopened with a message of resilience and gratitude to patrons. As of now, no arrests have been made; police investigations—scrutinizing CCTV and eyewitness testimonies—are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the frequency and brazenness of these attacks have rattled South Asian business owners, sparking debates on safety and law enforcement both in Canada and India. Activists and organizations have called for stronger policing and cross-border cooperation to curb crime and ensure the safety of immigrants and entrepreneurs.
What Next for Kapil Sharma?
The double attacks have cast a cloud over what was supposed to be a joyful new chapter for Kapil Sharma. With open threats extending to Mumbai, police have ramped up his security, but questions remain: Should Kapil issue a public statement or apology? Are further attacks possible? Will Canadian and Indian authorities be able to protect targeted celebrities and bring the culprits to justice?
What is clear is that the Cups Cafe incidents are not just the story of a celebrity under attack, but a stark warning about the growing menace of organized crime and religious extremism threatening South Asian communities abroad.
What’s your opinion? Should celebs like Kapil speak out? Can cross-continental gang violence really be curbed? Share your thoughts below, and keep following for the latest on this developing story.
