India Stands Firm: No Breakup with Russia Amid US Tariff Pressure, Oil Imports Continue

The ongoing tariff war between India and the United States shows no signs of letting up, with former President Donald Trump pressuring India to distance itself from Russia. Trump has threatened India with a 25% tariff and additional penalties if it does not comply. Despite these tactics, India has repeatedly made it clear: it will not abandon its strategic partnership with Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated unequivocally that “India will do what is in India’s best interests.” India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also highlighted the strong and time-tested relationship with Russia, emphasizing that India will choose the best available option for its energy needs.

A recent Reuters report echoes this stance, confirming that, despite mounting global pressure and speculation, India will continue purchasing oil from Russia. Trump’s claims that India would cease buying Russian oil have been widely challenged by government sources, who insist there will be no immediate change in policy.

India’s long-term oil contracts with Russia make an abrupt halt in imports practically impossible. Sources further point out that India’s purchase of Russian crude has helped stabilize global oil prices, keeping costs manageable despite Western sanctions. Unlike oil from Iran or Venezuela, Russian crude is not subject to a direct import ban, and India is able to buy it below the price cap set by the European Union.

Far from cutting ties with America, India has simultaneously increased its energy imports from the US. According to Business Today, since Trump’s second term began, Indian crude oil imports from the US have risen dramatically. Data shows that from January to June 2025, imports grew by 51% compared to the same period last year, reaching 0.271 million barrels per day. India has also increased imports of LPG and LNG from the US.

Despite these numbers, Trump remains dissatisfied with India’s ongoing energy ties with Russia. Still, the Indian government continues to emphasize the importance of strong bilateral relations with the US—all while staying resolute that its friendship with Russia will not be compromised.
